We recently surveyed the readers of The Theological Educator on the use of laptops in class. The responses were ranked as follows.

31% - faculty members should improve their lectures and fully engage their students. The prevailing response laid the responsibility on us lecturers to “outdo” the potential attractions and distractions of Internet use during class. If students are not engaged, it is our responsibility to engage them so much that no Twitter feed or Facebook update will attract them more than our lecture. Theologically speaking, the weight of agency is placed on the individual who has received the gift of teaching, and it is up to him/her to use it to the best and bring fruit.

27% - students should be confronted with the issue and be allowed to propose adequate policies. The response that ranked a close second, places the responsibility on students. They should be treated as adults and involved in finding solutions. Theologically speaking, the weight of agency is here placed on the recipient of ministry, who must till his/her soil to prepare it to receive the seed of truth.

19% - disciplinary action should be in place. This could either take the form of the lecturer checking on what students are doing, or of a regulation sheet of some sort. Theologically speaking, this response reflects the “ministry of the rod” that is necessary for successful education.

15% - nothing should be done. Students are able to multitask and would get distracted in any case. This response admits that the condition of “multitasking” is legitimate and that distraction is unavoidable. Theologically speaking, there is an openness to contextual creativity, where societies change and theological education must adjust. There is also admission of the inevitability of the consequences of the Fall, which may include distraction.

5% - devices connected to the internet should be banned in class. This option ranked lowest. Theological educators apparently are resigned to the latent presence of Internet access during their lectures. Theologically, this may reflect a stance of respect for the free will and agency of students, but it may also betray a fear to dissatisfy our consumers with oppressive regulations. In the following video clip, Professor D Cole from Georgetown University Law School, shares her views on why laptops should be banned from class.

We are pleased to publish the results of the research conducted by Dr Graham Cheesman on behalf of the EEAA (2012). The research has asked the following questions:

In what ways has TE changed since you were a student?

How are students different today from then?

How has the role of the teacher changed?

Has the relationship between teacher and student changed in nature and practice? How?

The role of the teacher is often seen in tension between being a scholar and a minister; do you agree with this and, if so, how has it changed?

TE is often described as having three formation objectives for students; academic, practical ministry and spiritual. Has the balance and relationship between these changed? Is this taxonomy out of date?

Accreditation for schools, government and otherwise, has become a larger issue. What are your views on this?

How do you think your college/theological education provision will change in the next ten years?

How do you think theological education will change in your country in the next ten years?

How will students be different from today, in ten years’ time?

How do you expect theological education to change in the next ten years because of finance issues/problems?

People in Europe today (unlike the past) have a number of different jobs and careers in their lifetimes. Does this affect what we do?

It has been suggested that nowadays, people come to college for different reasons than some years ago. Do you agree and how does this project into the future?

There has recently been a shift away from residential training. Will this continue and what do you think about it?

What are the things we must do as theological schools in view of the possible future?

What will be the characteristics of effective theological teachers in the next ten years?

Is there anything else you would like to say about theological education in Europe not covered by the questions above?

The EEAA Council met for its biannual meeting 29-31 March in Korntal (Germany). The following are some of the meeting’s highlights:

The date for the EEAA General Assembly in 2013 is confirmed for 24-26 October at Neues Leben. The theme and speaker of the GA were discussed, and the decision was made to lengthen the conference (programme running from Thursday at lunch – Saturday lunch).

Applications for the MA in Theological Education developed together with the London School of Theology are going well with over 20 applicants (most of whom are from the majority world). European theological educators are encouraged to submit applications.

The ICETE consultation will be held in October in Nairobi. EEAA schools are encouraged to send delegates and take advantage of discounted rates. See http://icetedu.wordpress.com/

The EEAA is participating in several pan-European and global consultations on issues such as cross-border accreditation, international collaboration and trends in theological education.

Finances. The budget is generally stable, although several schools are in arrears of their fees. In light of rising costs in the EEAA, a letter will be sent to schools asking for voluntary contributions but no fee rise is envisioned.

Discussions were held again about full membership in the ENQA and registration in EQAR. It was determined that at the moment the costs still outweigh the benefits. The EEAA will remain an ENQA Affiliate.

The EEAA Manual is now completely revised, and the 5th edition will be published by the summer of 2012.

Discussion was held on new Council members and on the Chairman to succeed Goran Janzon in 2013.

A new network called European Alliance for Subject-Specific and Professional Accreditation and Quality Assurance (EASPA) has recently been created for quality assurance of professional associations across Europe. The EEAA is investigating the relevance of this organization to its operations (see the Dusseldorf Declaration).

Membership in the EEAA has been granted to IBSTE Castelfelds (Spain) bringing the total number of EEAA schools to 69.

Congratulations to the following schools to whom Accreditation or Candidacy status was granted:

Seminário Teológico Baptista (Lisbon), Candidacy for Vocational Bachelor

Instituto Bíblico Português (Lisbon), Candidacy for Certificate, Diploma and Vocational Bachelor

Arab Baptist Theological Seminary (Beirut): Accreditation Certificate

Theologisches Seminar Bienenberg (Liestal), Accreditation of Certificate, Vocational Bachelor, Post Graduate Certificate and Vocational Master

Akademie für Weltmission (Korntal), Accreditation of Vocational Bachelor

In 2012-13 Accreditation and Candidacy visits are planned to Lisbon, Jerusalem, Wiedenest and Vienna.

School news. With the revision of the format of The Theological Educator, the “School News” section will be relocated in the EEAA website. Schools are welcome at any time to send news items to office(at)eeaa.eu.

The fourth working meeting of the editorial board of the Slavic Bible
Commentary took place February 7-18, 2012, at the AMI Center for
Biblical Studies and Research in Jerusalem. Work on this project has
now been going on for nearly two years.

At this meeting, authors’ guidelines were prepared, as well as the
procedures the theological and literary editors should follow as they
go over the text of the commentary and of the analytical articles.
Eastern European authors representing a variety of evangelical
traditions will be involved in the project. The Slavic Bible
Commentary is scheduled to be published in the autumn of 2015. (Here
you can see some pictures: http://goo.gl/69MxQ).

The Slavic Bible Commentary will be a single-volume commentary in
Russian, covering all the canonical books of both the Old and New
Testaments. Its intended readership is pastors, preachers, teachers,
small-group leaders, and anyone else serving in a local church
setting. The main goals of the commentary are to foster a better
understanding of the Bible and greater competence in the use of the
biblical text in various areas of church ministry, to encourage the
study of the Bible in light of its original cultural context, and to
improve the quality of the preaching of the Gospel in local
communities.

The initiator of this project is the Euro-Asian Accrediting
Association of Evangelical Theological Schools (http://e-aaa.info),
through its Research Center (http://research.e-aaa.info), with the
support of the Langham Partnership (http://langhampartnership.org.uk).

Sergey Sannikov & Taras Dyatlik,
on behalf of the editorial board of the Slavic Bible Commentary.

……………………………………………………………..

Mark it down in your datebook now! If you are involved in evangelical theological education anywhere in the world, the place to try to be in October 2012 is NAIROBI, KENYA. That’s where others in similar roles to yours, with similar concerns and with similar commitments, will be gathering from all parts of the world—at ICETE’s fifteenth International Consultation for Theological Educators. In the global world of evangelical theological education there is nothing equivalent. The dates to write down are 15-19 OCTOBER 2012. Principal participants in the 2012 Consultation programme will include: Chris Wright of Langham Partnership, Doug Birdsall of the Lausanne Movement, David Baer of Overseas Council, and Geoff Tunnicliffe of the World Evangelical Alliance, plus other global leaders and thinkers—all of them believing that the work you are engaged in matters, all of them ready to reflect with you, interact with you, and support you.
