Council Meeting Highlights – March 2012

The EEAA Council met for its biannual meeting 29-31 March in Korntal (Germany).  The following are some of the meeting’s highlights:

  1. The date for the EEAA General Assembly in 2013 is confirmed  for 24-26 October at Neues Leben. The theme and speaker of the GA were discussed, and the decision was made to lengthen the conference (programme running from Thursday at lunch – Saturday lunch).
  2. Applications for the MA in Theological Education developed together with the London School of Theology are going well with over 20 applicants (most of whom are from the majority world). European theological educators are encouraged to submit applications.
  3. The ICETE consultation will be held in October in Nairobi.  EEAA schools are encouraged to send delegates and take advantage of discounted rates.  See  http://icetedu.wordpress.com/
  4. The EEAA is participating in several pan-European and global consultations on issues such as cross-border accreditation, international collaboration and trends in theological education.
  5. Finances. The budget is generally stable, although several schools are in arrears of their fees.  In light of rising costs in the EEAA, a letter will be sent to schools asking for voluntary contributions but no fee rise is envisioned.
  6. Discussions were held again about full membership in the ENQA and registration in EQAR.  It was determined that at the moment the costs still outweigh the benefits.  The EEAA will remain an ENQA Affiliate.
  7. The EEAA Manual is now completely revised, and the 5th edition will be published by the summer of 2012.
  8. Discussion was held on new Council members and on the Chairman to succeed Goran Janzon in 2013.
  9. A new network called  European Alliance for Subject-Specific and Professional Accreditation and Quality Assurance (EASPA) has recently been created for quality assurance of professional associations across Europe.  The EEAA is investigating the relevance of this organization to its operations (see the Dusseldorf Declaration).
  10. Membership in the EEAA has been granted to IBSTE Castelfelds (Spain) bringing the total number of EEAA schools to 69.
  11. Congratulations to the following schools to whom Accreditation or Candidacy status was granted:
    1. Seminário Teológico Baptista (Lisbon), Candidacy for Vocational Bachelor
    2. Instituto Bíblico Português (Lisbon), Candidacy for Certificate, Diploma and Vocational Bachelor
    3. Arab Baptist Theological Seminary (Beirut): Accreditation Certificate
    4. Theologisches Seminar Bienenberg (Liestal), Accreditation of Certificate, Vocational Bachelor, Post Graduate Certificate and Vocational Master
    5. Akademie für Weltmission (Korntal), Accreditation of Vocational Bachelor
  12. In 2012-13 Accreditation and Candidacy visits are planned to Lisbon, Jerusalem, Wiedenest and Vienna.
  13. School news.  With the revision of the format of The Theological Educator, the “School News” section will be relocated in the EEAA website.  Schools are welcome at any time to send news items to office(at)eeaa.eu.

The EEAA Council and Staff are grateful for an excellent spirit of collaboration and partnership in the work of quality assurance and encouragement of theological education.
